I'm a traveler in the age of adventure and come upon a new land named Burkistan. I meet with the locals to learn their ways, and they teach me that upon a great hill is an ancient gnarly tree, and each year they must sacrifice ten virgin girls in front of the tree or else god will smite them down with sulfurous rain and plagues of boils. I ask them if how they know this, and they say every young Burkistani is taught from a young age about how god will smite them if they don't make the sacrifices. When I ask if they've ever tested sacrificing less than ten virgins, or none at all, they say that would get them all killed and be utterly ruinous, and it is their custom to put to death any Burkistani who dares question the flaming wrath of god if he doesn't get his rocks off on some dead girls. What is my takeaway? Is it to believe the Burkistani custom and their ways? Clearly, the truth of the matter is unknowable to me, not privy to the ways of gods. Their holy men insist its true, and the few heads of heretics are enough nobody will say its false. Its a compelling argument the Burkistanis make, after all.
