I believe you people who are overreacting here are being intentionally stupid.
Who is overreacting? I never predicted a three day war. I remember the results of the USSR vs Afghanistan. I remember their methodic nature when it came to Crimea. 3 days? A week? They'll keep at it for 10 years if that's what it takes, and not bat an eye. The only people claiming it'd be over quickly were officials and media outlets in the west. The people claiming that Putin is attempting to reform the USSR? All again, in the west. I'm that rare person who simply goes to the source, sees what they have to say, looks at their actions, and makes my own decisions. Based on both the statements and the actions of Russia throughout this minor conflict, there's been no evidence that Putin's stated goal of securing the independence of the Donbas Republics isn't true. In fact, that, the acknowledgement of the independence of the Crimea Republic, and the "in perpetuity" abstaining from any NATO membership. Quite literally, the only entities who have not acted outside their stated intentions are Russia and oddly China. And China is somewhat shocking, to be frank, given they've allowed a couple of their larger "private" companies to stop doing business with Russia for the time being, in order to continue doing business in the US. Given that's against the stated interests of the CCP, it seems they may have relaxed the fist a tad.
Far from overreacting, I'm just starting to come to the realization that nuclear deployment may actually have a small possibility to occur. Not only the number of weapons, not only the type of weapons, but right down to the US Taxpayer paying for the salaries of the Ukrainian government? This has very quickly and obviously moved into an open proxy war. The problem is, Russia does not appear to see it that way.
We'll see. I posted a couple times very early on in this topic stating very clearly my unchanged opinion: I don't care. I'm tired of the "Russia is the devil, Ukraine is a saint" bullshit the propagandists are spinning, and feel it necessary to play devils advocate. But in the end, I don't care about the results of Russia/Ukraine. I only care that the US not involve itself because it does not touch on our national security unless/until we provoke Russia to a point that they decide to take offense. Therefore my big gripes are just how many billions have been stolen from the US Taxpayer to fund Ukraine, and just how many billions more worth of our own National Security stockpile of weapons has been "gifted" to Ukraine, that the US Taxpayer will have to pay to replace... Out of the stockpiles of US Weapons Manufacturers, who most of the administration are highly invested in, and who already have the stockpiles to replace what we've sent to Ukraine, they just need to be transferred into Military control.
Any rate, fun convo. If something comes up, will check back in. For now, will simply watch the inexorable advance of Russia, and see what new form of stupid the guy in the whitehouse pulls next.
