This whole back and forth only makes sense if Ukraine's goal was the cynically dissuade their own troops from surrendering for fear of reprisals.
Ukraine held these farcical war crime trials while the war is still ongoing, persecuting POWs publicly. Knowing Russia would retaliate tit-for-tat, as escalations go.
It would be really hard for Russia to sit back and watch Russian POWs be subject to war crime trials and not do the same to Ukrainians. They could plausibly have resisted the urge out of pragmatism for what follows, but Russia is too bitterly retaliatory
So Russia does the same to the Ukrainians, and what's the net result? Soldiers on both sides are less likely to surrender, fearing reprisals and mistreatment by the other side.
Which favors the currently entrenched and losing Ukrainian position. They want their troops to fight to the death in hopeless battles instead of aiming for any tactical victories, just to slow down the Russian advance.

It sure does make a mockery of the entire concept of international criminal courts. The Nuremberg Trials were held knowing the taint of victor's justice, and the prosecutors took strides to grant reasonably fair trials and several high level Nazis were exonerated. These meanwhile are just show trials at wartime, for no purpose but strategic propaganda and manipulation. The Ukrainians started it, the Russians acted in kind.

Ukraine is too big for russia, once inflection point is reached the agressors will slowly get fucked by decreasing capacity while it will increase on the other side. Will take time tho, so it's as much possible that Putin sack of shit get ousted or suddently dies from drinking a cup a tea.

Im not optimistic, and not pesimistic either about the war.
The sides in this conflict are equal. Obviously Russia is bigger country, but Ukraine is more motivated and has friends.
It could be every single of us, that makes a difference.
Example way of helping could be of course sending or raising some money to UA government. They are tight on bugdet as war needs money and economy was damaged in the war.
Another way in my opinion is to talk to people, to friends, to family. Governments are under pressure of people who say: "fuck Ukraine, give your citizens free money instead of helping the Ukraine". If we could convince some people in our neighbourhod that its right thing to help, that the war can potentially spread to more countries, that would give our governments some options to help.
The war is live, we can all help...

some reports outlining 2-4 more weeks until Russia has completel control of those areas in the east it is currently focusing on. I would imagine Russia then seeking to negotiate with Ukraine, Ukraine flat saying no and then the question is what will Russia do next.

depends what "those areas" means. i doubt that russia will have captured Kramatorsk/Slovjansk in 2-4 weeks.
