In hindsight, it was bad for the democrats that obama won the closely contested 2008 primary against Hillary.
With the political climate of 2008, and McCain as her opponent, even Hillary would have cruised to a general election win, and it was the right time for her to become president. After her term(s), a reasonable republican could have taken over, and after that one, it would have been Obama's turn at the perfect age of 55-63 (depending on whether Hillary and/or her republican successor had been one- or two-termers).
Obama was such a stellar political talent that he would have made it to the top of the democratic ticket, and the WH, anyway. As a prominent Democratic leader not bound by the traditions and necessities of the presidency, he could have exerted a positive influence on his party and the national discourse at large. And as his actual presidency showed, he was too young, too naive, too inexperienced. Had he ascended to the highest office a couple of years later, he would have been a more mature and more effective president. Perhaps he could really have become the big uniter, the big healer that he tried to be in 2008.
