That's why the reporting cutoff is chosen below the maximum cycle threshold. PCR is typically run at a standard 40 cycles but only data sub 34/35 is reported dependant on the assay. I routinely run samples out to 40-50 cycles with no issues of nonspecific amplification.

Mullis not muller is an actual insane person who did one amazing thing and vanished from the field. Nothing he says at this point should be believed as he's sufficiently fried his brain with drugs and alcohol. Oh and he died before the pandemic. That's how unnoteworthy he was in science despite revolutionizing biology. I bet most people didn't even know he died.

And to really drive the point home, yes you can absolutely use PCR to detect viruses. They have DNA or RNA. There is literally no reason to think PCR would be unable to detect a virus as people do it literally every day. The claim is just flat out undeniably false.
