I know who exactly are inside, as a matter of fact I know a few personally.
As a matter of fact , I protested beside some of them before.
Your point of showing me the Economist doesn't really mean anything really.
For background, in western society (at least european society, and specifically England) the narrative is as follows: "China" is the Baddy. They have an unhealthy inclination towards Australia, their neighbors and on the world stage as well as towards Religion and those they deem lesser races. They are now a threat. They are against certain religions and are, for want of a better expression, under communist rule which is oppressing their citizens. Therefore anything that they do which is bad will get alot of publicity. This currently includes:
1. The Mass "Re-education centres"
2. The Mass bulldozering of churches
3. The Mass incarceration of people
4. The Mass genocide of people
5. That it is not a free/open country, not a democracy but a communist dictatorship
6. A variety of other items, including but not limited to the theft of technology and the low value of life which chinese hold as compared to the heroes of the west that can do no wrong.
These are not my views, they are the items which we constantly hear about. This is what we get day in day out week in week out year in year out. Only negative news, nothing positive. As a consequence of this China is probably more feared then Russia. Either today or 1 year ago.
If I were to take the long view I would say:
China visited Africa. They looked around, said hello, and left. Europe visited Africa, they stuck around and did a lot more then just say hello. Ultimately we are talking about different cultures and different forms of government etc. There are flaws in all societies. Yes europe is more open, yes bad things happen in china, yes we all want a peaceful world but nowhere is perfect.
