I mean if you have a very basic and narrow world view I guess everything can be categorized into being Hitler or anti-Hitler.



tbh no idea mate, i know it's from some anime. I just liked the symbolism/art of a planet crashing while they stand together knowing their world is ending.

Assad is (/edit WAS) quite unusual, for want of a better word. He is a duck now though (i.e. walks and talks like a duck, therefore is a duck, where users can have their own view of what "duck" means (read; not good)). Also his wiki is very left leaning and is a better example of same then comparing donald and obama's wiki. no doubt our resident troll will have something to say in Assad's favor. (but but he signed the Paris Climate Agreement).

It's a poor analogy and i'll explain why. There is nothing that compares to the atrocities that Nazis/Hitler committed. Literally the whole globe objectively believes that what they did was wrong. Anyone that holds a swastika flag today should be shunned because of what happened 70 years ago. The problem with these comparisons is it changes the nature of the discussion and basically categorizes one as teh moral side meanwhile the other side as immoral.

When people compare Trump, Putin, Assad, Trudeau, fill in the blank to Hitler, they are inadvertently saying those people are like Hitler who is objectively evil and there's a moral dimension, objective right and wrong. Problem with this is, it's actually not true and there's a lot of grey area. If Assad would of been toppled you would of had a power vacuum filled by islamic fundamentalists like Al-Nusra, like ISIS and so on. If he's Hitler, an objective bad, then that would mean the forces that oppose him are moral goods? So let's say Assad is overthrown and now we have islamists beheading their opponents and taking Yazidis, Kurds as slaves, is the world a better place like it was when Hitler was defeated?

yes i understand the point re: Godwins Law. I try never to broach that topic in discussions like this (waves at thread). You can add saddam to the list alongside assad. and yes to that power vacuum concern. i.e. to take it a step further, if putin was no longer a force, would this enable someone far worse to fill the gap.

gassing your own people and comparing to hitler is obviously a terrible mistake by me, just like skinned, we're as sorry as german grandpas about it all.

The gassing accusation happened when he was winning the war, when Russia and the Iranian militias started swinging their military dicks in Syria and it was very clear the rebels are going to lose. It makes no sense for him to use chemical weapons when the west very specifically said they'd step in if he does. Like if you logically think about it he had little to nothing to gain from using and a ton to lose. To this day, a lot of sources are disputing that the Assad regime was the one that actually used them.

I don't say this to defend Assad, I say this to make the point that these are never black and white something like WW2 was.
