With the Ukrainian war hitting Ukraine and Russia's critical exports and an acute cause of a heat wave, India is banning all wheat exports to conserve its food supply with immediate effect
India has been the second biggest producer of wheat but not one of the biggest exporters, like China it is mostly domestic consumption. There's a huge imbalance where exports are Russia/US/Canada/France/Ukraine, but production is China/India/Russia/US/France and Ukraine is a few pegs down below Pakistan. But after the war in Ukraine started in earnest, there was a big rumbling about whether India could switch to fill the gap left by Russia/Ukraine by exporting some of its massive share. The answer is no. India will not prevent a global food crisis. So one of the guardrails against an impending crisis was just removed, India will ensures its own people get fed.

This is the logical conclusion of the neoliberal capitalism we've spent the past 60 years creating.
