The first variant that was of concern was over a year into the pandemic. So... No.

Also there are dozens of papers tracking mutations even in the first few months of spread.

They were monitoring mutations the entire length of the pandemic. The term variant didn't rise the public conciousness because no mutant strain replaced the original Covid strain until the Alpha variant started displacing OG Covid. Additionally this is the first major pandemic in the world of cheap and fast next-gen sequencing. Every pandemic in the past likely had similar effects with variants rising and falling but we had no real way to detect it.



You do realize the spanish flu eventually ended because the dominant variant became less lethal and now circulates annually as a strain of H1N1
