My dream society is the one in that episode of black mirror where all the fat people are forced to work as janitors who get spat upon by able-bodied bike riders who power the utopian society where everyone is locked in small cubes forced to watch their sweetheart get rammed in pornos. I can't say it was their intention with the episode, but it provides a perfect example of taking these arguments to their logical maxims. A society with the compulsory participation of every citizen to work towards the common good and have their talents utilized optimally. Mitigating wasted resources and all those risks posed by allowing personal freedoms.

I actually agree we should tailor public policy against obesity.

But guess what

That doesn't matter once the virus is here. Once it's here you have to implement public policy to keep your healthcare system and economy going. And that means masking up, isolating, and vaccinations.

Don't like it? Tough. That's society. Those without enough discipline to do the right thing will eventually be forced to do so when things get bad enough.


But of course you don't actually care about any of that. You care about feeling superior and being selfish. And that's why you'll lose everything if it gets bad enough, and I'll be laughing as your "discipline" costs you everything.

Some part of it is just the mental excuse that by getting a vaccine and wearing a mask, someone can convince themselves they've already done their part to mitigate the pandemic. Even if their personal choices and conduct are the still the biggest causal factor. It becomes a sort of a fig leaf, a woke virtue signal for those reveling in vice. Its okay to eat an entire large pepperoni pizza and 2 liters of pepsi in a single sitting, as long as you obey the latest dictums of high priest fauci. Doesn't matter if they are hoarding health-care resources to themselves to the exclusion of all those poor grandpas and grandmas who get a stroke and show up to a packed ICU without a bed available. They might as well be waiting for their slice of pizza.

We can argue about public policy around obesity all we want, but none of that matters once the virus is here. Once the virus is here you have to implement policy based on the population you currently have. And the population we currently have is obese.
