LATimes: To the editor: Thank you for publishing Ruth Madievsky’s op-ed article on the hate and threats directed at Russian speakers in the U.S. after the invasion of Ukraine. Speaking Russian does not indicate support for President Vladimir Putin or his killing of Ukrainians. This should be so obvious, yet many Americans sadly think it heroic to attack without thinking, reminiscent of attacks on Sikhs and others deemed to be Arab after Sept. 11, 2001.
London: LONDON — Russian chef Alexei Zimin is donating part of his London restaurant’s revenue to support Red Cross work with Ukrainian refugees. He has been singing songs by a Russian dissident poet on Instagram, posting messages such as: “Stop the war. Withdraw troops. Bring our soldiers home.” He knows that in speaking out this way, he may never be able to return to Russia, where he has been credited with leading a gastronomic revolution and owns two more restaurants.
And yet angry messages are filling his restaurant’s voice-mail inbox. “Russians are killers,” one declared. “You’re Putin’s Russians,” another accused. Zimin, 50, is among those who have been hit by a sudden and rapidly rising tide of anti-Russian sentiment in Europe. While governments have moved to punish Russian President Vladimir Putin and sanction oligarchs, while societies have been calling for cultural figures — from hockey stars to opera singers — to denounce the war, Russian expats who have never had sympathy for Putin and who are horrified by what’s happening in Ukraine say they are facing a wave of generalized hostility. “Across Europe, people who have no involvement with the war are being targeted and removed from positions,” said Aleksandra Lewicki, a sociologist at the University of Sussex. “There’s a sense of a clear enemy, it’s Russians, from all walks of life, who are being targeted by racist hate crimes and derogatory comments.” Lumping all Russians together was a predictable “knee jerk reaction,” Lewicki said.
im not sure if that 2nd story was already posted or not.
This is normal, the Western Media and more often than not, the American media powerhouse have such influence and effect everywhere in the world where it can turn and influence polls and citizens.
Please note that American led media technology have a foothold in 99% of the West, and in East Asia , South Americas and South East Asia.
We are talking about giants.
Even the most used search engine in the world is google.
I think I have posted a video in regards to press freedom to you before and you have watch the entirety by Mr Lee Kuan Yew.
It was easier to control foreign media then but almost impossible to control in our day and age.
Countries with "similar" values will side with one another, and the media that is being portrayed by the said media stirs up emotions and passion thus blinding one's analytical ability.
Those that are able to see or understand the situation who point out a more "neutral" point of view is being bombarded and silence by the world, ridiculed and at times threaten.
Remember when the Coronavirus started, it was so bad in the states that it doesn't matter if you are Chinese descent or not, as long as you are Asian you will be targeted ruthlessly.
A Singaporean Chinese studying in London School of Economics was brutally beaten because he is "Chinese".
So Russians being targeted who do not support Putin or even anti Putin are not uncommon.
This is not just a discrimination of language , it is the beginning of a possible cultural genocide.
