In any case it's not a fair comparison because in the US a huge problem has been opioid pain medication prescribed in abundance by crooked "pain clinics" you might want to look that up

to be fair, i should have remembered who i'm talking to and given you the crayon version: those countries still aren't perfect, they still have drug related crime and social issues, and their overall superior approach has some intrinsic downsides - but looking at the big picture, only a madman would come to the conclusion that the war on drugs, the criminalisation of addiction and even recreational use, is the way to go.
