Late reply but here goes...

Western Europe has a significantly larger population, GDP, standing military as well as military spending than Russia. According to your logic, Russia should accept a subservient role in such a partnership. Do you think they'd be interested in that? ^_^
If you consider Western Europe as one monolithic entity, sure... And imo Russia would still be interested in that.
The reality is more akin to the weight of Russia in such an alliance being comparable to Germany... It would be a union dominated by German-Russian relations, and the rest of the nations are in more subservient position.

So you're saying Europe should have bet more strongly on security guarantees from Russia?
Not just security guarantees... security integration. I am talking joint arms industry ventures, the whole nine yards...
In the cold war Europe's economy and security were both integrated with US.
Now there is a discrepancy between economic dependence and security.
Isn't the goal of security is safeguard the prosperity of the economy? The situation now is anomalous.
Sadly when push came to shove, the Germans decided to have a brainfart by joining the bandwagon of demonizing and segregating from Russia... But I don't think this will last too long no matter the ripple waves of the current conflict in Ukraine.
