Also, in 2005, Russia was still very weak, so they had to play nice. I don't know if Putin/the Russian elite already had intentions of rebuilding the Soviet Empire in 2005, but if they did, hiding these ambitions was the smart thing to do.

Unfortunately, the German or French help is meager and poor. They simply do not know what the Soviets mean (...), what the steppe wilderness means, and even reports from Ukraine do not somehow urge them to any more help - for a simple reason: they never felt the shoe of the Russian invader in their state. In 1920, Poles defended Europe "against this wilderness". - Now Ukraine has taken on the same task.

i think the point of the post was to take the wind out of the sails of the pootin apologists' narrative about how russia's attack was somehow "justified" because of "broken promises" of the west, illustrating how the current russian government officially stated that a ukrainian NATO membership was up to them to decide.
