mentally handicapped people, especially those who are very impaired, are incapable of defending themselves.
so if you (just as an example) said "hey man what are you trying to jew me here" to a guy at a cash register, some 300 lb bear jew behind you might set you straight. if you call someone retarded you're calling them someone incapable of change, and that group can't defend itself from the slight.
really it boils down to that for me, mentally challenged people aren't capable of defending themselves against such slights. this is all in general of course, i'm not saying mentally challenged people are some unified group of helpless people.
How is this distinct from making jokes about a group not present? If I make black jokes and there are no black people around to defend themselves from the jokes I'm making, is that equally wrong, or is that less wrong because if there theoretically was a black person they would theoretically be able to defend themselves, despite there not actually being one present?
Just trying to understand your perspective; I think perspectives are fascinating, but also recognize that they are nuanced, so thorough questioning is often necessary to understand.

It saddens me to agree with this.
Be the change you want to see! I certainly won't, because I am a horrible, lazy piece of shit.
