I don't think we prosecuted too many of the allied soldiers or jewish prisoners in ww2 who commited war crimes against german soldiers. I expect (if ukraine survives) that no one except russian lackeys (belarus) will be rushing forward with calls for prosecuting ukrainian soldiers at the end of all this.
I sympathize with the ukrainians more than usual specifically because i come from a background that has faced the same atrocities the russians have commited in ukraine. You will not find me caring for any amount of dead invading russians no matter the circumstances.
We didn't hold significant trials for low level enemy soldiers. There were only 24 defendants in the Nuremberg trials and 28 defendants in the Tokyo trials. We focused on military leadership.
Personal animosities and grievances are what motivate people to commit war crimes, rational people motivated by justice are who stop them. I've got a family history on the receiving end of these same atrocities and several more, and also of helping bring war criminals to a fair trial and just sentence. If people who suffered through the Nazi occupation could find the reason to distinguish criminals from the innocent, why should people generations later and untouched by conflict hold psychological hangups?
I've got to say, of all the things I sympathize with the least, literal Nazi war crimes is the absolute bottom of the bucket.
