Well they shouldn't . But depending on who is the liberator or aggressor sometimes even if it happens like rape, cases will be dropped against those perpetrators.
It is a very uncomfortable and difficult situation.
Absolutely, they should be made prisonners then judged, but in practice "it's war". When an entire unit surrender it can be done.
But when you arrive in a village where a bunch of 20 russians soldiers are doing war crimes on unarmed civilians since 3 weeks , well... "It's war" ...

Should or shouldn't is irrelevant. Cause and effect. If you abuse POWs in a manner deemed offensive to the internationally-agreed rules of war, you risk backlash. In this specific scenario, I observe that enough people and governments in the West have decided that ethnically Russian people are fair game for limitless suffering, therefore there's not really much risk of backlash - the Western Pravda will spin it however they please. I'd be surprised at the sheer amount of jingoistic bloodlust before Covid, but now, it's obvious to anyone paying attention how easily-controlled and manipulated the great masses of humanity are to become instruments of war and death.
The only thing i could agree is that Putin declared war from a comfortable seat, sending men who have no intention to fight at all.
