what makes you think im against vaccine btw? i said numerous times vaccines should be given to old people. they're great for anyone over 60 imo, and possibly for some people in their 50s

This has been posted and talked about but I'll just reiterate: we would have been better off if much of the healthy population was infected and developed a natural immune response, instead of shutting down and waiting for some savior vaccine.

That's really the most important takeaway from the artcile: even those who enjoy natural immunity conferred by a previous infection can cut their risk of reinfection roughly in half by a single dose of the mRNA vaccines.



Regarding the bolded: the problem with acquiring natural immunity is that you cannot do it quick enough without infection numbers so skyhigh that keeping the elderly/less healthy protected becomes nearly impossible.

To ""safely"" build up naturally immunity in relevant quantities without a vaccine, we would have had to send the elderly and those with preexisting conditions into uber-strict lockdown for 3 months during the summer of 2020 while the young and healthy try to get infected as much and as quickly as they can, followed by another 3 weeks or so of total lockdown for everyone to cool infection levels down before the unprotected risk groups can go out again.

Doing that during winter would be far too risky; doing it during the summer of 2020 was too early. We didn't know with sufficient certainty yet how frequent the young and healthy require hospitalization or develop long covid. By the spring of 2021, we already had vaccines, so just getting jabbed was the less disruptive way of dealing with the virus than this approach. Also, it would have required huge amounts of coordination and compliance across society and thus been destined to fail anyway.
