The Russians just went crazy and completely skipped the Phase 3 trial for their new vaccine. Only tested it shortly on 50 soldiers, and will now probably mass deploy it among their population without knowing anything about side effects or long-term risks. I wish them the best of luck, but this approach seems like a recipe for disaster. Consequently, the rest of the international community went "nah, we're good".

no idea why the west has to criticise russia all the time, i guess you're just jealous that russian science is so far ahead of the rest of the world. it's completely safe. they tested it on putin's daughter... no, seriously, they totally gave it to the most powerful man of the country's daughter, although she has all the means and opportunities to socially distance and take any conventional precautions she desires...

fucking authoritarians and the idiots who believe them... i really hope this won't turn out to be a complete disaster, the russian people have suffered enough under putin's dictatorship (inb4 some economic and historic illiterates claim that it was him alone who brought relative wealth to his people)...

Maybe it makes sense to only administer the vaccine to healthy people so that they don't spread it if shortcuts are taken. Maybe they can distribute the vaccine in denser areas first. Honestly, I don't know the merits of doing that because I know next to nothing about vaccine development.

I think experts like Fauci already said that the first batch of vaccines will most likely not be given to the most at-risk demographics.

Either way, I, personally, will not be among the first ones to take any shortcutted vaccine. The risk from the virus is exceedingly low for me personally, so I'll sit back and let the plebs play guinea pig.

You are a good citizen then. I would trust a vaccine developed in the EU. America, less so. Having followed Theranos pretty closely (they were a competitor at the time) I've become very disenchanted with the FDA. Obviously medical devices are very different than vaccines/pharma, but we've seen that regulatory institutions can be corrupted.

18 months for all 3 trials combined.

If you have a perfect manufacturing process in place, all trials go perfectly and have an amazing response rate, and you get fast-tracked through FDA approval, 18 months is what you would look at.

If you get a vaccine in less than 18 months it means they either cut corners on analyzing effectiveness or safety.

Ah, that's good. Development started in earnest in April, and the current ETA is early 2021, so about 9 months instead of 18. So that's slightly less time being taken off the normal schedule than I thought.

And yes, I agree that cutting corners here is risky. But like I said, we have to compare this risk with the damage that additional months of the raging pandemic would cause; and in the end, it's probably a risk worth taking.

Theranos was so easy to see it was bullshit.

You don't come into well-developed industries and just decide to cut the price by a factor of 10. If it were that easy it would have been done already.

Emerging markets like green tech you can maybe see that happening over a decade or two because the technology isn't well developed.

I don't feel sorry at all for anybody who lost money on Theranos, and I see the same thing happening on some of Elon Musk's projects like the hyperloop.

I agree. She almost got away with it too because "fake it til you make it" is a huge part of the Silicon Valley culture.

hah what a scam that was. that meteoric rise of some privileged nobody who ticked ‘all the boxes’ was incredibly suspect . and yet Holmes basically became a superstar hanging around hollywood and the white house with everyone falling over themselves to hail her ‘brilliance’

i did some investing in biotechs around that time and got some familiarity with the ins and outs of how trials work. Theranos seemed to just skip every step it was beyond reasoning
