"You are safe" and "worsening infections among the vaccinated" isn't necessarily contradictory though, since
the vaccines were protecting against pretty damn close to 100% of the serious complications. A case of"worsening infections" could just mean the protection went from 95% to 90%, or that symptoms got more severe but not more dangerous, or any number of things
When I googled "Covid19 breakthrough infection" I got this article
https://www.startribune.com/breakthrough-covid-19-cases-accelerate-in-minnesota/600092238/Which pretty clearly outlines that in Minnesota at least the breakthrough rates aren't concerning.
This is a case of cherry picking to reduce credibility, not a case of actual loss of credibility.
The bolded claim isnt true in Israel, where the vaccine protection waned among the high-risk groups (mostly the elderly, they were ofc vaccinated before the younger folks) just as delta arrived, leading to a surge in covid deaths in spite of their high vaccine uptake among the adult population.* It was always foolish to communicate "if you are vaccinated, you are totally safe" before we had any data or experience with the duration of the vaccine effect. That the protection would wane eventually was always expected by the experts. As far back as December 2020, the vaccine producers were predicting that boosters would be needed after around 6-12 months.
So the bottom line is that Biden's CDC director
ignored the science so that she could put out a nice, simple "mission accomplished" speech. Even without the emergence of Delta, her message was overly optimistic/left out an absolutely crucial caveat. She should have known better and deserves the flak she's getting.
*Don't get fooled by the 60% fully vaccinated number for Israel - their population has a very high share of children. A 60% full vacccination rate in Israel is equivalent to at least a 70% rate in the US or Europe.
