we had it in most places post vaccine, the cases per day was way down. honestly at least in my area in wisconsin even with delta variant fears and antivaxxers all around we're still not at a rate of new cases that i'd support lockdowns again. and we never really locked down the first time for the most part, it was only bars/indoor dining. everything else stayed wide open outside of a few things.

and for what it's worth i thought all along the answer lied in govt assistance for elderly, people who care for the elderly, and immune compromised people. keep them fed, hope they're smart enough to stay put, let it burn through the rest.

but in america doing something just for one group is frowned upon by one side or the other. so we tried the one treatment for all people approach and it failed.

Masking would be a fine practice in moderation. Much like how it used to be practiced in Asian nations. There could be a sociological and/or psychological cost to perpetually enforced masking. I think a return to normalcy is preferable. I'm no doctor, but it seems like preventing the spread of the cold and flu might result in underutilized immune systems and make people more susceptible to illness and infection. But that might just be old boomer "har dee harr harr it build up your immune system" logic.

Yeah that's not based on any science. If you want to utilize your immune system in a way that doesn't hurt others go eat some dirt. You'll get instant exposure to several trillion new potential antigens.
