Jeebus, you're like one of Starlink's target customers. They can't roll that out fast enough.

I wonder if that will do anything for ping though. I don't really understand how it works other than distance essentially as send and recieve packets can only go do fast, but can they be pushed faster? Obviously light will travel faster than something using copper, but where do satalites sit in terms of communication speed and relaying it back to a server.

Isn't my area of expertise, I can only hope.

And it sucks

So there's that

I can play games on my phone's hotspot, so as long as there aren't too many links between you and the main network you'll be fine for ping.

The early tests of Starlink have shown far lower ping and latency rates than traditional satellites (ping in the 30ms range, I believe), as Starlink satellites run in LEO (low-Earth orbit), as opposed to geosynchronous orbit, so the signal travels a far shorter distance. Drawback to that is that the system, when fully deployed, will require around 12,000 satellites to operate.

Interesting. I'll have to look at expected timelines and add 40% or so. I see at a quick glance 60 went up and there's private beta testing stages happening with employees only. Only 11,940 to go.

Edit: Actually appears 775 have gone up.

"SpaceX is producing approximately 120 satellites a month"

Might be awhile yet!

Just ran a ping test on 4G to all US WoW servers for fun. Best ping I could get was 644.So whatever Space X uses would have to be significantly better than Bells 4G infrastructure.

Good write up on the testing going on in the Pacific Northwest part of the US. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/09/29/washington-emergency-responders-use-spacex-starlink-satellite-internet.html

https://www.heritage.org/american-founders/impact/new-york-times-quietly-edits-1619-project-after-conservative-pushback

Quote
Originally the leading text on the landing page for the digital version of the project read: “The 1619 Project is a major initiative from The New York Times observing the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery. It aims to reframe the country’s history, understanding 1619 as our true founding, and placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.”

The original reference to the “true founding” was subsequently removed to read: “The 1619 Project is an ongoing initiative from The New York Times Magazine that began in August 2019, the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery. It aims to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.”
