The more time I spend digging around on the internet as things pop up at the trial, the more I move towards the side where being sentenced to 40 years wouldn't be strong enough. The way to improve the situation would be to send an even stronger message that Chauvin is not representative of the way the MPD wants to be viewed.

If OJ can get slammed with a 33 year sentence for a ridiculously trumped up 'kidnapping charge', then the state should have been able to throw some extra bullshit at Chauvin.

Great example:
Oj was found not guilty in a court of law.
In the court of public opinion we found him guilty.

He was not FOUND guilty, he was however guilty and we all know it.

In particular, we know he was guilty because he wrote a brazen book in which he very directly admitted to the crime.

The scumbag murdered two people, got away with it and then felt the need to spit society in the face...

He was never proven not guilty, he only walked because the jury was bamboozled by a smarmy lawyer, in a decision which was widely criticized by experts, pundits and commoners. And then he admitted to the murder a couple of years later. So no, there is no "innocent until proven guilty" in this particular case.

IUPG is technically a legal thing, not a cultural thing.

Although OJs situation was actually quite unique in this regard. For him, there actually was a 'cultural presumption of innocence' because of his reputation. Both his friends and the general public (who only knew him from media) had this idea of "OJ isn't the kind of person who is capable of something like this". It's only after the evidence came out that people realized he had a different side to him.

I don't agree with that characterization. The defense won the case squarely, per the rules of the system. A "guilty verdict" is different from the question of whether he inserted a knife into two people.

We have a system where the burden of proof is on the prosecution. A cop's failure to follow protocol can properly result in a 'not guilty' verdict.

His legal guilt was not proven (per the rules of the system) even though everyone knows he was holding the knife.
