By far not everyone who gets hospitalized with covid is fat or unhealthy. These are risk factors which increase the likelihood of a severe course, but they are not indispensable prerequisites for ending up on a ventilator.

I, for my part, am a strong believer in personal freedom and individual agency. People should have the freedom to make whatever decision for themselves that they see fit, even moronic or dangerous ones. In my humble opinion, it is not society's job to protect people from their own stupidity. But that's probably easier to say for a selfish, cynical bastard like myself than for a healthcare worker who by definition made helping and curing other people his or her livelihood.

This works until you take like two seconds to realize decisions like these fundamentally cannot be kept personal. Of course we can't force everybody to get vaccinated, but we can make a shit load of things contingent on vaccination or a recent negative test, including concerts, airline travel, and restaurant dining.

I'm fine with that approach if it's left to the individual businesses whether they want to require such a proof. What I'm not fine with is vaccine or test mandates by the government.

You can't refuse to treat. That's not ethical even if it is personally satisfying.

Unfortunately at least in the United States we have Republicans actively punishing local school districts who make their own decision to mandate masks.

The states messing with the local governments (or school boards) is stupid. And it goes against the usual Republican focus on states and municipal rights.

That said, I see a difference between private businesses whose services and offers are completely voluntary requiring masks, negative tests or vaccinations, and public schools (which are quasi-mandatory for most people) doing it.

Public schools being mandatory is an argument in favor of mask mandates, because you're forcing students into a potentially infectious environment.

The thing is, Republicans don't give two shits about state or municipal rights. At all. On any level. They care about enforcing policies they agree with, and that is it. There are no principaled stances in the Republican party, it is all about big money and power politics.
