The no smoking thing is important with freight ships that have bulk materials and substances creating highly volatile atmospheres with a very sensitive LEL.
Throwing lit cigarettes down a diesel tank won’t even ignite it, let alone cause this kind of damage.
The only possibility I can think of would be a confined space explosion, and even then it wouldnt be enough for this kind of vessel. Plus they don’t store ANYTHING in a confined space; they are voids.

You can see based on the scorch markings that fire engulfed the port side passageway from the pictured impact point just above the waterline aft to the fantail.

Yup, and if I hazard an educated guess, the impact may have gone through to one of the engine rooms based on the location of the smokestacks. Passageway flooding can be sealed in a lot easier than engine room flooding.
