To me, it's kind of baffling why any modern navy would operate a warship over 10000mt displacement. They're white elephants in the vast majority of operational theaters one could find a warship in.
I'm actually of the mind that the American super carriers are bordering on being white elephants just as large gunships have been for decades. Probably not yet due to their overwhelming projection of power, but damn, imagine if one Chinese anti ship missile hit a super carrier in a ticklish spot. There goes a hundred billion of military assets gone in a moment.
If they can be supported and defended then they are huge assets. But yeah, only worth it if you are staging a really big operation.
Interestingly enough hospital ships are a major method to project power too. If you sail a hospital ship across the world it sends the message that you are willing to need it.
