We've included deaths in care homes into our figures today, over 4000 deaths onto our total, taking us higher than Spain and probably Italy soon. Also, the government will include suspected coronavirus deaths where a test hasn't been performed post mortem.

The government have done the right thing including them in the figures now and ramping up testing massively, but we were too slow to act.

I'm still hopeful that the UK's potential for GDP recovery from this is higher than every other major Western nation. As an advanced service sector economy with only a very small manufacturing sector we have the highest percentage of jobs that can be worked from home and over 80% of our workforce is employed by large firms, which are far more likely to ride this out as they have larger cash reserves. Coupled with a surprisingly good fiscal response of paying 80% of furloughed employee's wages, freezing VAT, C tax and council rates payments I think we'll get through this OK. My only worry is with the transition period in the EU coming to an end in December we have no time to negotiate trade deals with the entire world...I sincerely hope the government's current refusal to extend the transition period is simply a negotiating tactic and not a serious policy.

Saving them might in the end be impossible. You cant properly protect the vulnerable population in nursing homes without putting them in an airtight quarantine together with their whole care worker staff until there's a vaccine (at least 8 months away, likely more), which is unthinkable. Nor can the whole world keep up the degree of social distancing and shutdown of economic and public life for the next 8++ months. (In that case, there would be no more money to pay for nursing homes anyway...)

Imho, the only real solution for this problem, the only way of preventing huge excess mortality among the elderly before the vaccine, is to find an efficient treatment/medcine which drastically increases the survival chances of hospitalized covid patients. :(

I cant imagine such an amount of young tourists in party-mood without clubs, bars, dancing - if the government officially orders all clubs and bars to stay shut, there will just be illegal underground clubs.

It's kinda interesting to hear that the BBC is cheerleading for a populist Tory-government. But perhaps I'm just projecting the role that the public media is playing in other countries, like the US and Germany, onto the UK...
Or perhaps the BBC leadership has deliberately decided to boost morale in the current phase and they will go back to calling the government out for its mistakes once the country is out of the woods.

it will always be snitched, on the other hand private parties...

People would just party and drink in the streets... "botellón" as we call it here... it's heavily rooted in youth culture here.

Some cities have banned botellón though, due to neighbors complaining about noise and the garbage that is left behind by those that don't clean up... so, I'm not really sure what the status in Benidorm is.

Some cities opt for banning it throughout most of the city, except areas with either a low housing density or an already very active nightlife (so there's noise regardless of botellón)... which seems like the balanced approach.

In any case, expecting people to pay 12€ for a drink in a club, when they can buy a bottle of Vodka and Fanta for less than that in any supermarket and drink it in the streets, is absurd... and the reason botellón is practiced everywhere here in Spain... even where it's banned (it just leads to groups being more separated, the drinking taking place in alleys, and someone being on the watch for police). People gather drink from around midnight to 2am or so, then they enter the clubs until 4-7 am.

Here's an image of Orihuela... 20k people gathering to drink and party, before entering the clubs.

So, as I said a week ago, our government will finally be allowing adults to go out for walks and practice sport starting on the weekend.

Today they announced that it will only be from 6 to 10 am, and 20 to 23pm. The rest of the day will be reserved for kids under 14 and people over 70.

wtf is this bs.

People who work will only be able to go for a walk... at night time. Not to mention, they'll want to have dinner and get some sleep for the following day. Or they have to go out at dawn, during the coldest hours of the day, and in a hurry before work begins.

The BBC aren't left or right wing, they're establishment, their employees are all graduates from Oxbridge.

6-10 & 20-23 is perfect for people who work, and the sun will still be there.
Thus Latin cultures need some education regarding social distancing.

It depends on you latitude and longitude.

For instance, the more to the south and the more to the east, the earlier the sun will set. In most places, it starts to get dark at 8-8:30 pm. And is night time by 9.

It's ok for people living in Galicia.

Btw, how is your government/PM's approval holding up? Sounds like they first fucked a lot of things up to get a situation as bad as it was, and then issued a ton of arbitrary and nonsense rules.

Ah, I see, thx for pointing this out. Since I mostly followed British politics in recent years when it came to Brexit and not other topics, I got the impression that the BBC is quite biased. Which is probably unfair since most policy issues dont split the population as cleanly along a populist vs establishment line as Brexit did.

Hasn't been asked in a while, it seems. Perhaps due to the lack of elections coming up any time soon.

GAD3, which is the best polling company by a mile, hasn't published any polls recently, but said a few weeks ago that they are going to release one very soon. I'll post when it comes out.

Edit:

I found this one, from 2 weeks ago. Electomania is decent

Of course, this is from 2 weeks ago... before any softening of the lockdown was announced, so the picture ould be different right now.

btw, it's funny how the president gets more approval from UP's voters rather than his own party's voters

my impression is the same as yours... they fucked up a lot at the beginning, and then they've been making a ton of weird decisions. What's worse is that they seem to change their decisions twice a week. I'm in favor of standing with our government in these times of crisis, but they are clearly fucking up in many aspects.
