The UK has now overtaken italy as the European country with the most deaths, and the 2nd highest death toll in the world. Our population is 65m.

Oof. Good luck on the recovery, I hope you'll be able to flatten things out soon. It at least seems like Boris has eaten his share of humble pie.

Our government is suffering a lot of pressure form other parties right now. Most parties are now voting against keeping the state of emergency (which they need to vote every two weeks), and they've needed the positive votes of centre-right progressive Ciudadanos and the null-votes of centre-right basque nationalist PNV to just barely pass it in parliament. Even with their help, they didn't reach absolute majority, which shows how fragile their position is right now. It will be interesting to see if they will be able to pass the next extension in two weeks time.

Does this also mean that you are the country with the highest number of deaths per capita in the world?

Actually, I'll revise that statement.

No in terms of the officially reported death toll.

Yes, in both per capita and nominal terms when using the FT excess deaths comparison to prior years.

We'll probably never know just how much is down to factors the government can't control; like population density and high proportion of population overweight or obese, and how much is down to them not being to organise a piss up in a brewery.

no, that's still belgium (if you don't count san marino) - and they have been for a couple of weeks now.

Belgium includes more deaths from nursing homes and so on in their numbers than most other countries. But this factor is really hard to include because it just cant be compared between countries.

^dro94 thanks for the cool chart! And I agree that excess mortality is probably the better metric to compare.

FYI the UK does now include care home deaths as well as deaths in homes. Clearly though, with the chronic lack of testing here so many coronavirus deaths have flown under the radar, as shown by the number of excess deaths.
