Noone is put in front of the button to launch nukes if they aren't willing to push it under orders to push it.
I'd agree that we aren't at the point of nukes yet, but we are closer than any time since the Cuban Missile Crisis. I don't consider it irrational or unwarranted to be concerned at the possibility.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_Soviet_nuclear_false_alarm_incidentEven IF the Russians decided to strike first, they are going to go after our military facilities first instead of population centers. They'll hit the Pentagon, NORAD HQ, critical military communication infrastructure, nuclear submarine bases, our nuclear silos, etc. Do you really think Russia is capable of performing something so precise without us knowing that SOMETHING is up given how well they've performed in Ukraine? The Russian military really isn't that irrational and we have a history of close communication with both Russian diplomats AND military in order to prevent such a disaster.
