Strongly disagree. I agree that we won't need lockdowns unless the hospitals are overrun but mask mandates are hardly intrusive.
Masks make sense in a select few settings, most notably nursing homes and crowded public transport. But there is little public transport in the U.S. to begin with, particularly in a place like Florida, so that point is moot.
In most settings, masks are largely symbolic and not all that useful. More importantly though, I don't think that top-down mask
mandates are the way to go. Offices, businesses or event organizers should decide for themselves if they want to require masks or not. And even in places where it's not mandated, people can still wear them voluntarily if they like. With how low mask compliance has gotten, the impact of a mask mandate by the state on actual mask usage should be rather low...
I'm a bit torn on the prohibition of local rules. It probably makes sense to prohibit overzealous local governments in deep blue places from issuing preemptive lockdowns, but prohibiting them from mandating masks within their jurisdiction goes too far. So I'll have to elaborate on my previous statement: DeSantis nails it by being pro vaccines and anti lockdown, but his stance on masks is not ideal.
