For all the ground the Russians have made up in the east in recent months, the fact that they're going around begging for cannon fodder soldiers in places like friggin' North Korea and Yemen is a bearish sign.
Ukraine's recuitment issues are obviously even worse, but this nonetheless confirms my assessment that both countries are currently engaged in a ruinous race to the bottom.

The upside is that Russia's evident personnel shortages make it more likely that they are open for a negotiated peace at some point in 2025.

The reason might be more banal: Ukraine is freaking huge and there are Russian patriot nuts from Moscow and St. Petersburg who support the war 100% until they're sent to the front

Russia has been seeking an end to the conflict since before the war even started. The US and England have repeated told western leaders, and Ukraine, to not seek a negotiated settlement. no revisionist history here please thanks.

I mean. Yeah. You shouldn’t agree to anything less than the return of ALL land (including Crimea). If you do you aren’t a country you are just a bunch of worms.

Stand your ground regardless until the following deal is offered:

The return of all land taken (including Crimea)

In exchange for

No NATO membership for 50+ years

Anything less is a farse

That was the point from the very start. And this is the biggest problem now. Under normal conditions, Russia would like a settlement because they are not interested in western Ukraine at all. But they were lied to every single time, no matter what the agreement, they won't believe it. The only way for them is to conquer as much as possible before their possibilities are exhausted. Minsk I and Minsk II existed but weren't upheld, 10y long, Russia tried to negotiate with NATO. They were told, it's not up to them.

Do you have a draft of something they wrote up where Russia offered Crimea back in exchange for no NATO membership? I never knew that was on the table.

In this treaty, Ukraine pledged to maintain "permanent neutrality". By doing so, Kyiv renounced any membership in military alliances. Thus, the country's accession to NATO would have been ruled out.
