The invasion of Ukraine happened after decades of NATO expansion (fact) and none of those countries were invaded when they were in the process of joining NATO.

Secondly, Russia made it pretty clear that they weren't going to accept Ukrainian NATO membership in December 2021 and NATO didn't give a shit and wouldn't even consider to negotiate (fact).

If you're claiming to be a defensive alliance and can prevent a conflict with a nuclear power (Russia) by not absorbing Russia's neighbor into your military alliance then you would do that.
