They got life in prison at an age of 21 and 28.

If anything this is good and shows Russians are willing to acknowledge war crimes and prosecute them. We will see more of this as this war draws to an end. You will finally be able to go back to Western Ukraine to your parents in Lviv or Ivano-Frankovsk or wherever.

Russia will have to deal with PTSD veterans for decades after this war is finished. PTSD is no joke and casualty rate long-run trumps war-time losses. People get desensitized to violence and are unable to adjust to civilian life. Russian social system will have to be modernized to provide for an influx of FPV-traumatized trigger happy returnees.

This pales though in comparison with Deschênes Commission that hid literal jew murdering nazi war criminals and allowed them to run rampant firebombing socialists (https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-ottawa-citizen-ukrainian-hall-bombin/132498005/) and physicaly exterminating those perceived to have sympathies with the Soviet Union.
