The risk of hospitalization and/or death from covid grows exponentially with age, the rule of thumb is that the risk increases tenfold for every 20 years of age. For a vaccine that reduces this risk by 97%* , this means that a fully vaccinated 80 year old person has about the same risk of hospitalization as an unvaccinated 50 year old and ten times the risk of an unvaccinated 30 year old.

So even in a world where all the older adults are fully vaccinated while the young are unvaxxed, we would still expect the vaccinated elderly to make up the majority of hospitalizations. The age stratification of covid risk is just THAT huge.





*not to be confused with the "88-92% efficacy number which is often floated for the mRNA vaccines, that one refers to protection against symptomatic disease rather than hospitalization!
