It can simultaneously be true that neither side has a direct interest in a nuclear disaster either on their territory or next to it, and yet the pernicious element of brinksmanship could make either or both sides have an interest in going right up to the edge of nuclear disaster in an attempt to get the other side to withdraw to avert such a disaster.

As far as I know they already shut down all reactors but the plant still needs cooling. Also the spent fuel rods still need cooling.

That's basically what happened in Fukushima: the earthquake-induced tsunami flooded the NPP and damaged the cooling systems and the electricity, which caused the reactors and rods to overheat and leak contaminated water.

Ukraine is the party which has BY FAR the most to lose from a nuclear disaster at Enerhodar, so this claim that they were relentlessly shelling that NPP seems highly suspect if you ask me.

Ah yes, as everyone knows, Ukrainian handling of NPPs guarantees their complete safety, a NPP would never blow up under Ukrainian control.

Ukraine was shelling Saporodjia NPP nonstop during Russian occupation. Russia had even less reason to cause a catastrophe with their troops stationed inside and around the Saporodjia NPP. The reporting at that time was so funny, MSM was avoiding at all cost telling that Ukraine was the shelling party. Instead, someone was shelling and it was dangerous

As the result of Ukrainian shelling.

Saporodjia NPP is the biggest one in Europe. There is no way some of that fallout wouldn't hit Russia. The wind blows from Ukraine to Russia in those planes.

Twenty-eight settlements are under enemy control," Alexei Smirnov said at a meeting with Putin, adding that the incursion was up to 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) deep along a 40km (25 mile) front.

Pretty impressive land grab. The overall tempo has slowed so either the AFU is resupplying for another breakthrough or they may try to open up another front(unconfirmed reports suggest Rylsk could be a target). This would make sense because the AFU has been probing Russian lines with recon units like crazy.

The cauldron the Ukrainians have set up in kursk now only survives with superior logistics(imo)

I said this prior, this is embarrassing for the Russians but could turn out real bad for Ukraine. They are operating behind enemy lines and have dedicated thousands of troops to this, so losses could be significant. The whole point is to probably force Russia to pull tens of thousands of reserves in the south and east to plug these holes and hopefully take off the pressure. While the western media fawns over this and spams how weak Russia is, what's largely ignored is the critical losses happening in south Donetsk. They've already reached Novohrodivka/Hrodivka and if those fall Pokrovsk is next and is a hugely strategic hub for control of the Donbas.

This is Ukraine's great counteroffensive 2024. Compare to 2023 when they had a lot more forces and material to burn. They're slowly bleeding out.

Kudos to Ukraine for not releasing a Hollywood style trailer this time though, seems like they learned their lesson.

The Russians are bringing the war to battle front towns and cities. Fortresses like Toretsk, New York, Chasiv Yar, Krasnohorivka--all of which are incredibly tough grindy battles where the bulk of the war is being fought right now. Ukraine unable to really turn the tide in those areas chose to basically blitz a Russian border region that had a few hundred border guards at most, with thousands of troops. Now maybe this does force Russia to re-direct a lot of resources and weaken the central assaults but if i was a betting, i would bet the farm that Kursk territory is in Russian hands 5 years from now when the war is done, not so sure about Ukraine's holdings in the Donbas though.

Sure. I'm not claiming that this push means Ukraine is winning. Russia remains the bigger player with more of everything.

The unexpected Ukrainian push is like a 1 vs 10 situation where the one guy jumps one of the others, takes him in a choke hold for the moment while yelling at the 9 others "I got you by the balls motherfuckers" and then gets his face bashed in.
