I mean, the big risk has and remains the overwhelming of the healthcare system. As I said previously (or in another thread?) the hospitals and clinics I did all my medical work at are absolutely fucked right now, and mainly because they have some of the lowest vaccination rates in the country.

I don't buy that our messaging was particularly poor on this. We had a president minimizing the risks and encouraging his party to do the same. The messaging could have been pitch perfect and it wouldn't have made much of a difference with the literal president actively undermining his own medical staff.

Trump surely didnt help the efforts, but I think it's too cheap to blame everything on him. I believe many of the folks who listen to medical advice from a guy like Trump would have been anti-vaxxers anyway.
Hypothetically, say there's a president Mitt Romney in 2020 and he urges Americans to take the vaccine - you'd still have swaths of rednecks and evangelics arguing "jesus didnt need a vaccine" and crap like that.

Trump's messaging does not clear people from their personal repsonsibility for the decisions they make. This whole "Trump poisoned their minds"-narrative is not convincing. These people's minds were mush long before Trump.

Definitely would still be a bunch of anti-vaxxers, but a Republican president also has the power to pressure governors to get in line, and to not actively undermine the expert medical staff making recommendations.

Hell, his first statement on masks spent more time saying "THEY ARE VOLUNTARY" than he did asking people to wear them.

To be fair, these medical experts were waffling quite a bit on masks in the beginning. The messaging on this particular aspect was a total mess, irrespective from Trump. He didn't make it any better, don't get me wrong, but still...

Also, if Trump had come out as a covid hawk, urging governors to impose lockdowns and such, it wouldnt surprise me if Dems had taken the dovish position and resisted him. Heck, the MSM would have run story after story about what an authoritarian threat Trump is, that this is a preparation for cancelling the 2020 election and we're on the brink of devolving into a dictatorship, and so on and on.

Maybe we should just stick with what actually happened instead of silly hypotheticals?

The idea that Dems were against everything Trump does because it's Trump doing it is the opposite of reality. They tried to work with his administration on multiple things including infrastructure very early on. Meanwhile we have leaked documents admitting that was actually the Republican policy towards Democrats. Like, you guys have the weirdest hangups about Democrats doing the thing that we already know for a fact Republicans made it their mission to do exactly that.

We have no indication that if Trump had come out as a Covid hawk he wouldn't have had the support of Democrats on reasonable measures, and plenty of papers were published showing Trump was the focal point for the majority of Covid misinformation getting spread.
