That's the trajectory Erdogan has been on for the past 15 years already. And note that the SCO isn't a military alliance, it's the counterpart to the Wester-centric G7.
As he himself admits, joining the SCO could take a while, probably longer than his own remaining time in office. Erdogan is clearly a spent force, his political shelf life is over. The next government of Turkey will most definitely be more Western-friendly.
In the meantime, I wish the SCO a lot of luck with their new buddies from the Bosporus, a country with 80 million people and 80% inflation, lmao.
Economic alliances and military alliances tend to get intertwined, it's the natural outcome of things. Turkey has long straddled a line between ally and self interests, and they're starting to tip to the other side. Sure, maybe it's a slow burn, until it's not. This announcement is coupled with a 1Bn dollar investment within Turkey by China's BYD. Guess why Turkey? Probably because of proximity to certain market? Remember how I was saying China will eat Europe's industrial lunch? Germany IMO has most to lose with Chinese EV's on EU's doorstep. They're not even saying we're going after Africa or SA, those have already been decided, they're boldly saying we're coming for your primary markets.

Turkey will soon unveil an agreement with Chinese electric-car maker BYD Co. for the construction of a $1 billion plant in the west of the country, Turkish officials said.
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to announce the deal on Monday during a ceremony in Manisa province, where the plant will be built, the officials said, asking not to be named because they aren’t authorized to speak publicly. BYD, China’s best-selling EV brand, and the Turkish presidency declined to comment
