1) Your statement is correct, the right for nuclear retaliation is indeed defined vaguely in Russian military doctrine.

2) You know what is truly ludicrous? Shelling nuclear stations hoping to cause an accident.

UKRAINIAN DRONES HIT ZAPORIZHZHIA NUCLEAR PLANT ON WEDNESDAY MORNING

Quote
Head of Russia's atomic energy agency Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, told reporters on Wednesday that Ukrainian forces attacked the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant with drones this morning.

According to Likhachev, three drones struck the Raduga substation in Energodar, which provides energy to the city. At the time of the attack, which is said to have occurred at 10:30 am local time, workers were attempting to restore power supply at the substation. Likhachev noted that eight people had been injured, but that everyone survived the attack.

Last month, the substation's electricity transformer had been damaged during a reported attack by Ukrainian forces.

According to Russian reports, which aren't exactly trustworthy and most definitely don't tell the whole truth.

Again, I have to ask: what exactly does Ukraine gain by attacking the Zap nuclear power plant? It is their own country which will be contaminated by radioactive fallout if there is a disaster at that plant. And even if they were to seize control of the plant with their attacks, they have no chance of holding it in the long run because it's located on the Russia side of the Dnieper river.

It makes ZERO sense for Ukraine to attack this plant. So what's the explanation here? That Ukrainian leadership is completely braindead?

Zero sense for Russia using the same logic. Putin claimed Zaporizhzhia (region) as a part of Russian Federation. But it doesn't change the fact that ZPP was attacked, again.

They will gain international attention by blaming Russia for “mismanagement” of a nuclear plant that Russians Soviets built and Russians know how to operate and upgrade.

Ukranian military leadership is clearly not independent from ultranationalists within their ranks (who just dismissed a literal general and Zelensky looks like he takes personal orders from Biletsky every time they do a photopp together). Those neonationalists see no problem becoming a martyr for a cause so long as it achieves the ultimate goal (of killing semite-led untermenschen). Sort of like HAMAS or ISIS really.

Soviets tried to exterminate this ideology and partially succeeded until it was revived in the 1990s by the leftovers of Nazi descendants that migrated to eg Canada. Ultimately I believe you need to fight ideology with ideology or at least economic measures, not violence.

Months back, Ukraine used to pester Russia's Belgorod region with random raids. Most of this wasn't really intended to cause any sort of military objective but really force Russia to dedicate some troops to defend and generally pester Russian population in a 'see we can do it to you too' way. Mostly though it was a low hanging way to get some sort of positive publicity. The uno-reverse card got played in recent months though by the Russians. First with them pushing into northern Kharkov forcing Ukraine to dedicate a significant number of troops to defend Vovchansk and now they're crossing the border into some Sumy villages. The point of this IMO is not that they're looking to possibly annex some of these sparsely defended border regions but rather force Ukraine to deploy troops they really don't have in reserves to defend, while detracting from the actual fronts in the south and east.

It strikes me as dual purpose. It puts immediate pressure on Ukrainian lines, which was clearly successful in Kharkiv despite Russia committing only a fraction of available reserves. Similar groupings are now on the border with Sumy, opening a front there would force Ukraine to commit reserves that don't exist. At the same time, even limited gains set up the prospect of future offensives down the line.
