strong censorship
Moscow is the capital city
Kremlin is the symbol of power
Elites are Russian
military budget and ambitions bigger than possibilities
disrespect of individual
opposition banned from elections

foreign friends (Syria) supported militarily and politically
Differences:
Communist ideology replaced by Russian nationalism with Orthodoxy
Private property allowed
still very significant portion of economy owned by the state, but less than in the USSR
foreign communist countries supported morally instead of financially
state-funded propaganda not only internal as in the USSR but heavily external as well
the love affair with the Orthodox Church in exchange of services for the state ideology
secret service guys stronger than the Communists
