Let's present the situation simply:
Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Ukrainian prisoners are currently being tortured and/or raped by the Russians.
The Russians have committed war crimes and caused hundreds of billions in damage.
Russian regimes have been known for their violence and treachery for centuries.
Vlad Putin had promised that he would not invade Ukraine. He obviously lied.

It is impossible to trust the Russians or expect them to behave normally.
They only show understanding when their backs are against the wall or when they are completely exhausted or dominated.

It's sad but it's like that.
