The spiritual meaning is irrelevant. He ordered the wholesale slaughter of entire cities and nations. The question is how that shows love for the people who were murdered and enslaved, whose children were dashed against the rocks and whose homes, property and even livestock were put to the sword and the torch.
If you're claiming that God never commanded these things and that the stories are just allegorical then fine. But if you're claiming these acts were committed on His order then I say there is no excuse, reason or 'spiritual meaning' that can include His love for the victims of these divinely ordered acts of genocide.
