Some will be placed in Ukrainian units or stationed on western equipment but that is nothing new.

Don't really see what it changes, might be some propaganda value for the west when some of them get killed but harder to sell that while their close ally Israel is actively hunting down westerners for providing aid to Palestinians.

NATO creates ‘joint mission’ in Ukraine – Poland

NATO countries have created a joint mission in Ukraine in order to expand the scope of support the US-led bloc can provide to Kiev, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced on Thursday.

Iirc, this move is a hedge against Trump winning the November election. By moving all of the crucial support and organization for Ukraine under the NATO umbrella, the US president (read: Trump) can't unilaterally pull the plug as easily.
