Large Russian troop buildup in the Kharkiv front, with UA ordering a mandatory evacuation of a large swathe of the Donbas they still hold. Will fully depopulate the remaining farmlands that hadn't already been cleared out, if the residents don't, ya know, defect.

Spring offensive? Unlikely I think, though its more likely than Odessa

Do you think Putin will have another round of mobilisation?

No need it seems like. They have enough volunteers, unlike Ukraine though which is on its like 15th round of mobilizations. Kind of what happens when one country has 30 million people and the other 150 million.

Unless they go on the offensive and they just might do that, now that elections are over, opposition is impotent and they have an issue with long range artillery / drones reaching into Russia. Drones haven’t done significant damage to eg airports or refineries yet, but at some point they will.

Putin did announce that they might consider creation of “sanitary zones at the border” which could imply an offensive - hence a need for manpower.

France's leaked military assessment says that Russia has been rotating troops and managing levels successfully, unlike Ukraine. And they've been flexible and responding in realtime, as we've seen with the past few days where the Bolgorod front had its conscripts swapped for experienced troops. I think the best we can ever predict in a conflict like this is what the current course is, which is that Russia won't even need wider mobilization in the foreseeable future. But that's only what we can foresee, and if tides change they could.

Ukraine on the other hand is already widening their mobilization, lowering the conscription age, being more aggressive with conscription agents, targeting the previously exempted farmers and Donbas regions who will not be motivated to fight against Russia. But they haven't gone all out on the western regions or lowered the age to 18 or started demanding the EU slave catchers send back runaway males. I think the losses at Avdeevka were astronomical enough to seriously dent the entire nationwide headcount, if the leaked report is accurate they were losing men at a rate much higher than they're recruiting them (in one battle, versus nationwide), and instead of a withdrawal to a safer line or an encirclement that captured an army, instead the 110th was simply obliterated.

Ukraine claims it will conscript 500,000 more soldiers with the new law, and in a demented emulation of what led to draft riots in the American past, Ukraine's law would no longer exempt farmers and other critical workers but instead pass crippling tax levies on them if they don't enlist, allowing the rich to pay to avoid the draft. But in the end, its got the issue void says above, Russia has plenty of soldiers already mobilized and vastly more reserves and men to conscript, Ukraine does not. Lowering the conscription age and trying to force Donbas farmers into the front lines will just result in more people fleeing both west, and in this case east since the easterners will more likely defect.

The number of spies in Finland has risen to Cold War levels. An ex-intelligence chief reveals to Iltalehti how Russian intelligence works in Finland and what it aims for.

Russian reconnaissance planes fly over Finland's territorial waters. At the same time, reconnaissance planes from the United States and other NATO countries are patrolling Finnish airspace to monitor Russia.

The intelligence searches for our weak points and active measures are aimed at them.

The aim is to make Finland as weak a NATO member as possible. It is in Russia's interests to get Finland to limit its activities as a NATO member by influencing political decision-making.

The third key area of influence is the Russian sanctions. Russia is looking for ways to circumvent the sanctions and is also trying to influence Finland's position regarding them

I agree, and to anyone who's parents arent orangutans this has been clear for years.

For instance, Russian military was actively fighting on the frontlines, geotagging their location (while also masking who they were employed by):

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jun/03/bloggers-social-media-russian-soldiers-fighting-in-ukraine

Furthermore, there exists hundreds of hours of on site reporting just in English, for instance by Emmy winning journalist Simon Ostrovsky reports for Vice. Ostrovsky was subsequently arrested by pro-russian peace loving separatists and beaten for days until finally released, his arrest also captured on tape.
