It's because family are typically the only people you can fully trust to have your confidence and confide the absolute truth. Talking seriously and emotionally with family can help alleviate destructive thought patterns - drug addiction, alcohol addiction, homosexual ideation, promiscuity etc. are all destructive thought patterns. They made a show about it called Intervention but these are things that should be done in private. And no because that is healthy.
