Afaik US special forces and contractors have been pretty much exclusively
behind the front lines. They've operated missiles and artillery and been involved directly in the battles, but not as foot soldiers storming trenches or holding the front lines. Yet US mercenaries / private citizens have been involved in the latter and several captured by the Russians, who definitely spread the word whenever they capture an American.
US personnel operating the weapons systems that are firing on Ukrainians is definitely the most direct conflict we've had with Russia since maybe the Korean war with Russian pilots, and then they were the ones disguising themselves as koreans. Syria doesn't really count because by the time we had some scuffles we were on the same side of the war.
