All I know is at this moment, there are population in Taiwan that wants independence , a sizable amount that wants to maintain a status quo and a number of older generation mid 30s or 40s and above wanting a peaceful reunification.
But the younger generation do want some sort of independence and they do not want to be govern like a Special Administrative region like Macau or Hong Kong.

Do you think at this moment Russia have shown their military incompetence to a point that nobody thinks they are a threat apart from their Nuclear Arsenal?
Also I don't think Russia's military hardware are too far off technologically speak as compared to the USA. But I do think that it is either very badly maintained or the end users are not well versed or trained enough in this current situation.
