So the most relevant question should be: What's next?

Russia will complete their hold over Avdiivka in the next few days, like they did over Artemivsk (gotta respect its transition back from Bakhmut). Its still winter, the avdiivka front hasn't been some huge breakout and overrunning deep ukrainian lines, its closing a pocket around the city. But what will happen on that front next, will Russia dig in along the fortifications Ukraine used to hold, like the bunker complex? Where will Ukrainian troops fall back, considering the terrain? There's about a 15-20 mile arc to the northwest of farmlands with pockets of villages, not enough to fortify like the avdiivka urban areas.
The most likely scenario is the conflict freezes again, maybe for months or even years. Could Russia try to stage a breakout and see if they can seize the farmlands and villages? If Ukraine has their own minefields and artillery lines to defend it, that doesn't seem likely, but if they're really routed, who knows.
It begs the question of when the US will be willing to come to the table and what gains will satisfy Putin. Avdiivka was the last big pocket inside the Russian line, I mean they could take smaller cities like Siversk like they aborted earlier, but then what?
If this gain is followed by a few months of lull, and we go into a presidential election season, will Joe Biden feel forced to actually deliver peace in Ukraine, or will Trump undercut him by bringing a peace message to a public who should be disinterested with Ukraine and unenthusiastic after their losses?

Wrong, there's been heavy fighting around Bakhmut for months on end, we've seen Ukraine throw the best brigades they had at the flanks of the city last summer in an effort to surround it including the elite neo Nazi Azov brigade, the kind of guys you're supporting here SMH. And the Russians pushed them back.

The badly led, badly trained, badly equipped conscripts that were thrown into the meatgrinder pushed the elite NATO trained / NATO equipped Ukrainian brigades back and now we never hear from Bakhmut again but the reality is that Ukraine's counteroffensive was defeated by the Russians that's how you call it when you lose a major battle that was prepared for a year and hyped up with Ukrainian army ads.

On topic: Putin wants to take land, he was explicit about it in his latest interview. If you think that authoritarian rulers should be able to take over or annex land freely then just be honest about it and dont complain when a superpower turns your third world balkan country into a suburb of Beijing.
