Would the prices from Canada and USA be as competitive with the prices Russia give? I am not good with this particular topic.
No, of course not. The shipping alone would cause US or CAN gas to be more expensive than Russian gas. That's basically why Europe got hooked on Russian gas in the first place: it was just too cheap and convenient to pass.
That's not the primary concern anymore though. In Europe, the current primary concern is to get the necessary gas at all. No matter how much we'd be willing to pay, it would simply be impossible to substitute Russian gas immediately. A Russian or a voluntary European gas embargo would cause a severe shortage of gas in Western Europe.
snipa was talking about a different scenario: the Russians intentionally cutting their oil and gas production and thus artificially inflating the prices as a tactic of economic warfare. My point is that this would increase world market prices and thus hit Europe, but that there'd be an upper limit on how high the prices could go due to NA fracking, meaning that this tactic was never potent.

fracking is an issue that is controlled by more than barrel price, it causes a lot of ecological issues not tied to emissions. the chemicals used severely damage watersheds and wouldnt be sustainable long term.
and we still have the investment of pipelines to deal with. look at what BS the us govt looked the other way at to protect its keystone pipeline investment.
I know, I know. This stuff is the reason why I don't want widespread fracking in my own country. Let's pollute uninhabitated, desolate wasteland like the Dakotas or Alberta instead.
