1. The war was necessary to figure out how much territory Ukraine would lose.
2. This post is wrongly assuming that Russia's only reason to wage this war was a landgrab, when it's fairly obvious that political considerations were a major factor in Putin pulling the trigger. If Ukraine had ceded roughly the territory currently held by the Russians, would Putin have accepted the rest of Ukraine to be fully independent and sovereign, allowed them to join the EU and potentially even NATO[1]? HIGHLY doubtful...





[1] Ongoing military conflict makes NATO accession impossible, so Ukraine would not have been eligibile before Feb22 due to the ongoing, frozen conflict in the Donbass. In this scenario (shedding their southeathern territories), however, they would no longer be embroiled in ongoing wars and thus able to join NATO.
