Ukraine has always been in the Russian sphere of influence. So when an eternal military alliance looks to upset that established sphere, the threat is existential in nature. It's not just about nukes on your border, it's much deeper than that.

So we are hearing that NATO was an existential threat to Russia but simultaneously that NATO countries cannot compete with Russia's industrial output.
The same NATO countries that were intentionally and inextricably tied to Russia for its supply of natural gas.

Wow, its almost as if that existential threat narrative is difficult to believe!
